Vintage Bavarian Folk Art Painted Wood Bread Bowl from German Restaurant

Vintage Bavarian Folk Art Painted Wood Bread Bowl from German Restaurant

$55.00
I was told this piece was originally used as a "bread basket" in a German restaurant in the Ann Arbor Michigan area back in the 1960s. This would be such a charming piece to re-use in so many ways in your home today. It could a a base for plants, a wonderful catch-all bin on the front hall table, a napkin or condiment holder at a buffet or - of course, the best bread and roll serving basket. How cute would it be with a calico liner?

This piece is hand made from solid wood in the same method used for beer barrels. It is hand painted with a charming row of flowers and accents and there are two side handles with holes so that it can be hung from the ceiling or a hook above the stove. This piece is Bavarian/German folk art and the décor style is known as "Bauernmalerei", or peasant painting. This piece also has the added design element of carved notches in the top rim giving it extra uniqueness.

This is such a practical sized bowl I think you would find yourself using it on many occasions. The piece has no significant paint loss to the decorative border. There are usage marks in the base and especially on the outside of one of the handles. (I suspect it was most often hung up from this side). The wood laths that encircle the piece have a slight gap in the lower piece, although it is firmly attached to the side. There has been some slight touch up of the brown stain near the laths.

This is just truly unique, practical and beautiful!
