Vintage Betty Furness Westinghouse Cook Book 1954 First Edition
Vintage Betty Furness Westinghouse Cook Book 1954 First Edition
$25.00
What a fun, vintage "vibe" gift for a new cook, seasoned cook or even a non-cook. This is a really nice copy of the Betty Furness Westinghouse Cook Book Prepared Under the Direction of Julia Kiene from 1954. First Printing. The front fly leaf has a colorful picture, the rest of the book contains a variety of black and white sketches that have red backgrounds as well.
Betty Furness began her career as an actress in the golden years of Hollywood. Like Ronald Reagan she became a celebrity spokesperson for Westinghouse appliances, appearing in many TV ads over the years. The Betty Furness Westinghouse Cookbook was all part of the Westinghouse promotional campaign. As Betty wrote in the preface, "Until I began doing Westinghouse product demonstrations on television in May, 1949, I'd never realized what a delight and a marvel of convenience a really modern kitchen could be."
Like other corporate cookbooks of the times, this is a 496 page, full recipe cookbook targeting young homemakers and novice cooks. The book is dedicated to You, a Busy Homemaker who gladly prepares three meals a day for your family, and who delights in doing it.
The book was published by Simon & Schuster, 1954 and is noted as the First Edition on the Title Page.
The book is in really nice condition with just a few nicks in the edges of the cover and binding. The binding is nice and tight and I wonder if it was ever used much as there is no staining, writing or evidence of being used around food. I believe the pages have yellowed a bit.
I have two other similar books in separate listings (see last two pictures). Rolling pin is in separate listing as well. Send me a message if you are interested in a package deal!
Dimensions:
8 1/4" x 5 7/8" x 1 1/2"
