Buddy Jim
By Elizabeth Gordon
Pictures by John Rae
Published by Wise-Parlow Company New York
1935 The Golden Hour Edition.
Tan cloth over boards with title and illustration in red on front.
This is the story of a little boy who moved from the city to the country for the summer. He and Old Dog Sandy became acquainted with the animals of the field and woods. Buddy Jim had never seen animals that were not caged up so this was a summer of grand discoveries.
Illustrated by John Rae, the full color illustrations throughout bring the story to life and are quaint, old fashioned and beautifully done.
The condition of the front cover is the roughest of the whole book. There is edge rubbing and corner curling on the cover with some tears on the top binding and quite a bit of soiling.
Otherwise the pages are in really nice condition and there is only the slightest of pencil marks on a few pages. No other writing in the book. The binding is beginning to come loose but still all in one piece.
Bio of the Authors/Illustrators:
Elizabeth Gordon (1866 - 1922) was a juvenile fantasy author whose works include Flower Children , Bird Children , and Mother Earth's Children , a delightful collection of poems about the "frolics of the fruits and vegetables."
John Rae (1882-1963) was born in Jersey City (NJ). He studied with Howard Pyle at Drexel Institute, and with F. V. Du Mond and Kenyon Cox; he also studied at the Art Students League in New York. Rae was well-known as an author and illustrator of children's books, though he also illustrated adult books for publishers including Harper's, Macmillan, and Dodd Mead. Rae was a member of the Society of Illustrators and other artists' groups. His portrait subjects included Albert Einstein and Carol Sandburg. He was Instructor of Painting and Design at Rollins College, Winter Park Florida, from 1935 to 1940.
I found a wonderful collection of vintage children's books for mid-elementary and older readers at a sale this past month and am working to get them posted. There is a little video showing the first four titles attached. Come back for more!
