Antique Book “The Adventures of Miltiades Peterkin Paul by John Brownjohn, @ 1916, Illustrated
$45.00
This is a 1917 republish of the 1887 book, Miltiades Peterkin Paul Adventures. It was republished under the title "The Adventures of Miltiades Peterkin Paul" A Very Great Traveler Although He Was Small, written by John Brownjohn. Illustrations included by John Goss and L. Hopkins.
The contents include three sections;
The Exploits of Miltiades Peterkin Paul, His Journey Around The World
Early Adventures of Miltiades Peterkin Paul
Further Adventures of Miltiades Peterkin Paul
88 pages, with small black and white illustrations on just about every page detailing the exploits of the youngest son of a hearty farm family in New England in the late 1880s. I read a portion of the book to get a feel for the story and it had exceedingly charming prose and accompanying illustrations, some made to look as though Miltiades himself had drawn them and others of detailed execution. It put me in mind of A.A. Milne's style and you were quickly drawn into the little boy's world, and were able to glimpse the world of the 1880s through his eyes.
This book is in very good condition for over 100 years old. The binding is tight and all pages are still attached. The edges and corners and binding all show wear and the cover is aged looking with both darkening and some staining, but still display worthy. The cover has a greenish-gray cloth cover with the cutest illustration of Miltiades Peterkin Paul upon his "trusty steed" in black with florescent orange accents. I was only able to find one other version of this actual book in my research, so could be considered a rare find.
The pages are heavier card stock. They are free of scribbling or damage other than age spotting and darkening. Slight storage mustiness. The illustrations are charming and the book amazes me for its age and condition. The original The Norman Remington Co. Baltimore sticker is on the inside back cover (Believe this to be the bookstore)
I was not able to find any background on the author but my research indicates these stories likely began as periodic stories in either a newspaper or magazine and were eventually complied into a book in 1887. This book is a re-issue of those stories and may included additional stories as well.
This was a new book to me and I really think it is a hidden treasure for reading to young children about adventures in a time prior to media influence.
