Vintage Pepito of Central America Book - Gladys Shaw Erskine
Vintage Pepito of Central America Book - Gladys Shaw Erskine
$15.00
This is a really special book which tells the story of "Little Pepito of Central America". The Dedication in the front of the book indicates it was for all children to those of the two countries I claim - North America where I was born, and Central America where I grew up - hoping that you will share with each other the love I have in my heart for all of you.
The book includes numerous photographs taken by the author in and around Costa Rica and Guatemala and the little boy Pepito was used to tell of the history and culture of that area of Central America. Would be of interest to any young reader that is interested in other cultures. Of particular interest is the first eight pages of the book that has line drawings in black and white and Spanish words translated into English. This book is part of the Children of All Lands Series published in the 1930s and 40s.
The Children of All Lands Series is an eighteen title series which chronicles the tales of children in their native lands. The stories take the readers on a geographical and historical tour of the title country. The text is complemented by numerous photographs. The stories are simply told for children. The first fourteen books were written by Madeline Brandeis (1897-1937), the author of four of the six volumes of the Children of America Story series. After her death in 1937 (from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident) , other authors were enlisted to write the last volumes in each series. Brandeis took the photographs that appeared in her books. This book was authored by Gladys Shaw Erskine.
Little Pepito of Central America was published by Grosset & Dunlap New York, Copyright 1941.
The book is in nice condition. The cover has some signs of age with roughened corners, edges and a breakdown in the fabric of the blue binding and the pages have colored with age but the binding is still very strong. The front and back pages are a wonderful white and beige map of Central America. The front pages have Property of Torrington High School Sept 1 1943 stamped on them. The back is very clean. All 191 pages are included and still attached to the binding and cover.
