Antique Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co Brown Transferware Vase/Toothbrush Holder
Antique Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co Brown Transferware Vase/Toothbrush Holder
$70.00
This beautiful antique Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co. ironstone vase/toothbrush holder is in the brown transferware pattern identified as MOWCOP on the bottom. So beautifully presented with the footed base and the brown transferware flowers on the front and back. There is a delicate flower design on the inside lip as well. I am not certain, but the Mow Cop of the pattern name may refer to a castle in Stoke on Trent. I could not find any other references to that name.
The piece (was it a vase? it was identified as a toothbrush holder at the Estate Sale) is in very fine condition with no noted chips on any of the edges. There really is no flea bites or crazing that I note. Very rare piece in amazing condition.
The bottom of the piece is marked B W M & C in a brown transferware mark with MOWCOP along the bottom edge. Rd 70235 is also note (I believe to be the Patent No. that may tell the exact age. I am not able to find the chart that converts this number to a date. )
Research tells me : BROWN-WESTHEAD, MOORE & CO were manufacturers of high grade earthenware and porcelain at Cauldon Place, Hanley c. 1862-1904. They were succeeded by Cauldon Ltd. As well as ware for the domestic market Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co specialized in ware for export and often ware was marked with the overseas distributor or seller
Dimensions:
4 3/4" tall
3 1/2" diameter of foot
2 5/8" diameter of top
