Antique Brown Transferware Aesthetic Movement Plates/Chargers
Antique Brown Transferware Aesthetic Movement Plates/Chargers
This pair of lovely, antique aesthetic movement large plates/small platters or chargers are by Florio Palermo. I believe the pattern name may be Roccoco based on the fascinating back stamp that indicates Manif Ra Florio Palermo Porcellana Opaca Roccoco. (Made by Florio Palermo Opaque Porcelain Roccoco Pattern?) and includes a very detailed seahorse drawing. I love it, just can not find any other similar products with this back stamp.
The plates have a lovely ornate decorative border along the top rim and are completed with scalloped and beaded rims. The design reflects the movement in the late 19th century called the 'Aesthetic Movement', when visual focus on design was for 'pure beauty', and 'arts for arts sake' over practicality. In the center is a half wreath of wildflowers and grasses and a butterfly flutters above them. The design is brown transferware, which is so complimentary to other colors and genres.
These plates are in very nice condition, especially considering their age. There are no chips or cracks or crazing. There are a few small brown age spots in the white background on the front and quite a few on the backs of both. There is some surface roughness along the outer rim on one of the plates. An interesting "flaw" is that the decorative outside design does not line up correctly on one of the plates. I find it charming, but wanted to point it out, in case this would bother someone. There are light utensil marks as well.
