Antique Brass Hanging Whale Oil Lamp Snotneus

Antique Brass Hanging Whale Oil Lamp Snotneus

$55.00
This piece came from an eclectic Estate sale that had many pieces of significant antique value. It took me a bit of research to discover the nature of this piece, but once I did it became clear that it is an early period (1880s - 1920s) Dutch Snotneus oil lamp (likely for whale oil). The name in Dutch means snotty nose. Oil lamps can drip oil if the spout is at this angle. Instead of changing the angle, the Dutch put an extra spout underneath to catch the drip and prevent the oil lamp from having a running 'nose' thus the name!

The piece is in very nice antique condition. There are some cracks in the seams of the lid and patina and usage marks on the inside and bottoms of both the lamp and the lid. The base is dented and not completely round. The spout would have had a cotton wick inserted to absorb the oil and light. (This is not included) The remainder of the brass is in really nice condition. It would polish up to a high shine if that was the preference. If you prefer patina, it will darken even more over time. A very unique, functioning hanging piece is attached. It hangs really well.

Really special. No makers mark but antique, rare and collectible for sure. The pricing in my research is quite high. I have priced this to be a treasure for a collector!
