Vintage American Geographic Society Around the World Program, Ceylon
$18.00
During the late 1950s and into the 1970s the American Geographical Society produced an Around The World Program set of albums (books). They were marketed as "Magic Carpet Tours" of the Countries of the World! The Around the World Program brings you and your family every month an informative album - plus gorgeous full-color pictures - of a different foreign country. Through these fascinating word-and-picture "tours", you meet the people, see the sights, learn the history, discover the customs of many far-away lands. Expert writers and top photographers prepare these albums and pictures for you, under the supervision of the American Geological Society.
Each book had spaces on some pages for colorful photo stickers to be affixed. They also had sketches and photographs. Each book had a color theme for the sketches and the accompanying maps. Part of the program was to also include a Tru-Vue Film card with 7 Stereo Views of the country.
I was lucky enough to come across 8 of these books, 5 of which have the sticker sheets still unpasted into the books and the 7 Stereo View Film Cards included. Since the stickers were never unfolded, there is a small area where the stickers are stuck together or slightly ripped from being "unstuck". The stickers would likely still be able to be stuck into the books, with some additional adhesive help.
All books were published Nelson Doubleday, Inc., Garden City, N.Y.. The set did have slipcases for storage, but no folders were found with these books.
I have listed each book separately. If you are interested in combining 3 or more, please message me and a 20% discount would be offered.
This listing is for Ceylon (Modern day Sri Lanka). The album was written by Lee Boltin,a free-lance photographer. This is the second printing from 1961. The accent colors in this album are shades of gold and black. Really excellent condition with just the slightest scuff in the bottom corner of binding and a subtle bump and fold in the right hand corner. Sticker #2 & #7 tore slightly in their corners when unfolded. Slight aging discoloration along the edge of some of the stickers. Stereo Viewer card and pocket holder in really nice shape. Slight musty smell.
Dimensions:
5 1/2" x 8 1/4" x 1/2"
