Pictorial Review Adventures of Polly & Peter Perkins November 1934 Uncut Paper Doll with Thanksgiving/Farm Theme, Paper Doll Ephemera 1930s
$30.00
This is an original 1934 color print of paper dolls drawn by American illustrator, Gertrude A. Kay (1884-1939), that published in the Pictorial Review November 1934 (Page 59). My research indicates that beginning in 1923, Gertrude created illustrated paper doll inserts for magazines like Ladies Home Journal and Pictorial Review. Her most popular characters were two children named Polly and Peter Perkins introduced in the early 1930s, who she regularly illustrated to be cut out and played with in a variety of scenarios. Popular pages of Kay's Adventures of Polly and Peter Perkins paper doll series included themes of wedding fashion, gardening, the old woman who lived in a shoe, Valentine's Day, and Christmas.
The copy on this piece indicates:
Adventures of Polly and Peter By Gertrude A. Kay
"Polly, Peter and Scotty visit the farm and meet new friends - among them the Thanksgiving turkey"
There are 10 images on the page - Polly, Peter & Scotty, Turkey, Pig, Goose, Lamb and winter coats and hats for both Polly and Peter.
There is a strip on the bottom of a farm and greenery with cutouts for inserting the animals. The color scheme is mostly shades of brown with red and white accents and green bases to blend with the green stand. The colors are still quite bright and appear to be representative as originally published. There is a bit of an uneven edge in the bottom left hand corner from being removed from the magazine. PICTORIAL REVIEW November 1934 Page 59 runs along the bottom.
This is in really amazing shape considering how long it has been a memento for someone. I can only imagine that is was special to someone to have been kept in this condition for so long. It would be wonderful to add to a Paper Doll collection or use in Thanksgiving decor - be creative!
Dimensions:
10 1/4" X 13 5/8"
