From the synopsis on the book jacket -

This is a story that boys look for but seldom find. For it is about a very real boy in that difficult year when he grows out of childhood, when he learns responsibility and gains independence.

More than that, it is the story of a year on a farm. Following the changing seasons, it gives a rounded and fascinating picture of the planning and labor necessary for success.

This is Douglas Gorsline's first book but he is well known as a painter and illustrator. And one can see the painter's eye for color and detail in the vivid, rhythmical descriptions. It is hard to decide which is most memorable: the strange coming of spring, the adventure on the freight train, the journey along the milk route, or the wonderful harvest dinner.

This is a tight, very well-preserved copy of the 1950 1st edition. The book is clean and near fine with only slight corner rubbing and little edge impacts. The book is covered in goldenrod yellow cloth with a green barn and graphics on the binding. The original dust jacket, with a full color illustration by Douglas Gorsline, is included. The cover has edge wear and a small rip on the back but is complete with the original price ($2.50) and Hudson's Book Shop Sticker.

The book is nicely illustrated throughout by the author himself in small black and white sketches. Truly a collector's copy.
