This is so amazing!
Spode's Tower pattern, from Copeland, was introduced in 1814. It has been produced in a variety of colors (e.g., blue, pink, and green). The original pattern was a printed transfer medium Ultramarine blue (pale blue). Around 1860, it was produced in a darker, 'flowing' blue (Royal Saxon blue or flow blue). Around 1894 the pattern was also printed on a Gadroon shape - a white scalloped rim with raised beads (based on Georgian silver designs) in dark Royal blue or Zaffres blue. This is the style of this plate with the older back-stamp of Copeland Spode's Tower England. The pattern has so much detail. The outside rim is flowered. The image in the center includes Spode's tower in the center back which is fronted by a bridge. In front of the bridge is the river with birds and a water gatherer with a bucket. Vegetation and landscape elements complete the image.
This is a singular luncheon plate but it would make an amazing piece to add to a gallery wall.
There is an impressed date which I believe is 87. There is a 2 in blue near the back-stamp. So, maybe February 1897.
The plate is in very good antique condition. The only flaws noted are some age darkening along the white rim. There is also a spot of blue on the rim and a few small ones in the sky that are clearly from the manufacturing process. No chips or cracks. There is crazing on the back, along with random blue marks and some age spots and usage marks on the bottom foot. The color is still deep and vivid.
This plate would be a wonderful addition to any flow blue collection or to use as part of Independence Day décor.
