Antique Axel Holm Hand Colored Etching of Village Street, Framed

Antique Axel Holm Hand Colored Etching of Village Street, Framed

$75.00
This is a vintage original hand colored etching by Dutch artist and graphic designer Axel Holm. These are highly collectible and sought after due to the characteristic style of the artist and the sentiment evoked by his etchings. This is one of two that were found at an Estate sale.

This piece is centered on a cobblestone street with buildings on both sides, some residential, some commercial with a small church tucked in the row. There are two figures walking down the street but they are not the central focus of the image. The clouds in the sky are reminiscent of Van Gogh's style. The special elements include the detail of the windows and doors on the buildings, the tiny church spire, the intricate pen strokes on the road and the way your eye travels down the curve in the road. The etching has Axel Holm in his signature script in its lower left corner, no date or location noted. Most of his work that I found in my research was from the early 1900s - 1920s.

This framed and matted artwork is in very good vintage condition. The piece is under glass and was professionally framed. The small profile brown wood frame has an inner bevel and nice grain work. The piece is single matted with a colonial blue color that compliments the etching well. The only scuffs on the frame is one very surface mark along the right hand side. The back is covered in brown finishing paper that has some tears in it. There is a substantial hanging wire, felt bumpers and one shop tag.

In my research I learned that Axel Holm (1861-1935) was a Danish artist and graphic designer. His etchings were often of villages, cities, buildings and natural elements in and around Scandinavia. He was an early financer of the Buch and Holm company in Denmark today.
